Promoting positive childhood experiences for pediatric patients and families

The HOPE framework centers on promoting key types of positive childhood experiences (PCEs) we call the Four Building Blocks of HOPE: relationships, environment, engagement, and emotional growth. Research shows that the more PCEs a child has, the more likely they are to grow into healthy, resilient adults.

Medical providers and organizations can incorporate the HOPE framework into their policies, programming, and practices to provide their pediatric patients with more opportunities for PCEs and improve their overall experience with inpatient care. Whether the provider is meeting with a child or family regularly or only for a few minutes, finding moments to practice the HOPE framework can have a lasting positive impact on the patient.

Recently, the HOPE National Resource Center created the  HOPE for Healthcare Toolkit, a collection of resources for healthcare providers. From tangible practices with adolescents to recording notes, these resources support implementation of the HOPE framework through the visit and beyond. By engaging in conversations and practices centered on exploring and uplifting the Four Building Blocks of HOPE, children and youth feeling supported, and parents can leave feeling empowered.

These resources help medical professionals bring the HOPE framework to their practice and promote PCEs for the child and family who come through their office.

HOPE in Every Electronic Medical Record Note

This resource provides a strengths-based Electronic Medical Record (EMR) documentation checklist for positive, patient-centered care. By intentionally documenting strengths, moments of joy, and protective factors, we strive to capture a more complete story of health and create a shared, hopeful language in the medical record.

HOPEful Case Reviews with TRIADS

The Four Building Blocks of HOPE and the TRIADS model can be used to promote strengths during case reviews. TRIADS stands for Trauma and Resilience-informed Inquiry for Adversity, Distress and Strengths. These tools allow for a more holistic process and reframe providers’ responses to center the HOPE framework. As you meet with children and families, use this worksheet as a guide to ask questions to understand their full experience.

Learn how your patients are practicing the Four Building Blocks of HOPE through this interactive worksheet. Patients can choose to write or draw their experiences with each of the Four Building Blocks. This can be given out in the waiting room while families wait to be called in for their appointment. The families’ visit starts on a positive note and helps practitioners learn more about their patients by going over this worksheet together.

This resource was created in collaboration with the Tufts Medicine Pediatric Primary Care – Boston.
