HOPE resources and tools for professionals in the education sector

We are excited to release our latest resource, the HOPE for Educators Toolkit, for teachers, school staff, school counselors, and anyone who works in K-12. This toolkit was created in partnership with HOPE Facilitators and HOPE Champions working in the education sector, and a student intern from Tufts Medical School, and reviewed by our Family and Community Experts of HOPE (FACEs) subcommittee.

Containing a collection of education-specific resources, this toolkit helps professionals incorporate positive childhood experiences (PCEs) into their classrooms and implement the HOPE framework and the Four Building Blocks of HOPE in their practices with students and their families. From posters to checklists to concrete practices, this toolkit is a one-stop shop to increase PCEs in education.

What to expect from this toolkit

Resources

This toolkit packages both new and existing resources by the HOPE National Resource team, designed specifically for educators and professionals in the education sector. The existing resources include definitions related to PCEs and the HOPE framework, and a breakdown of how to practice the Four Building Blocks of HOPE, the key types of PCEs outlined in the HOPE framework, in the education sector.

The new resources in this toolkit share tips on how education professionals can regulate their emotions as the adult in the room and help students regulate theirs. These new handouts go into detail about how to prepare for “the moment” before big emotions arise, tools for in “the moment,” and how to repair or communicate after “the moment” of big emotions pass.

Posters and Worksheets

The toolkit also features a printable poster that can be displayed around the school, and worksheets that can be used with students to better understand how they experience the Four Building Blocks of HOPE. These worksheets share prompts that students can respond to in writing or through drawings, and there is also one to help facilitate conversations about their experiences.

PCE Literature Review

At the end of the toolkit, we have included a literature review. Many people have asked us about existing research done on PCEs related to the K-12 population that they can use to advocate for HOPE implementation with their administrators, parent teacher associations (PTA), or school boards. This review shares several studies on PCEs specifically in education that can be used to show the importance and effectiveness of focusing on the Four Building Blocks at school.
